How to get mental health care without insurance

Options for finding mental health care without insurance, including community clinics, sliding-scale fees and assistance that requires approval.

This is general information, not clinical advice, and it is no substitute for talking to a practitioner about your own situation.

Without insurance, ask each provider about eligibility, cost and waiting times before booking. These routes can help you compare available options.

Community health centers

Search the official HRSA locator at https://findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov/ (external) for a health center near you. Ask whether it offers behavioral health services, what documents it needs and how its sliding-fee schedule applies to you.

Ask in advance what proof of income, identification or other documents are needed; fees and review timelines vary by center.

Sliding-scale and training clinics

Ask nearby university training clinics whether they offer supervised mental health visits, what they charge, and whether they have a waiting list. Availability and supervision vary.

Ask a therapist whether reduced-fee appointments are available and what the rate includes. There may be no openings.

Ask about self-pay fees

Ask for the full self-pay price before booking, including follow-up visits and any assessments. A reduced rate is not guaranteed. You can also search https://findtreatment.gov/ (external) for treatment options; check costs and eligibility directly with each provider.

Charitable assistance

The MindBridge Health may help pay for approved psychiatric care, therapy, evaluations, and prescribed behavioral health medications for people who qualify. Assistance depends on eligibility criteria, provider availability, and available funding.

Learn about help with therapy costs, mental health medication assistance, how to request support, or professional referral requirements.

Dates and external program details should be reconfirmed before relying on them.
